Andrew Marshall shares insights on people and culture in business
Entrepreneur and founder of Carlowrie Group, Andrew Marshall was invited to speak at Entrepreneurial Scotland’s Exchange Board meeting in Glasgow in August to discuss the topic of people and culture in business.
Addressing an audience of ambitious business leaders, Andrew shared insights from his own career and emphasised the importance of strong workplace culture, authentic relationships, and values-led leadership.
He also stressed the value of having a supportive network to lean on: “Being able to rely on the advice, experiences, and kind words of others when you need it makes a great difference.”
Lessons from 25 years in business
Reflecting on more than two decades in leadership, Andrew shared three key lessons about people and culture with the group:
Authentic relationships are a non-negotiable for your business – that’s within teams, in the community, and with suppliers. He shared that by prioritising people, he noticed a marked increased in employee retention rates and increased word of mouth referrals, while strong working relationships create a better workplace environment for everyone.
A supportive network of people, particularly those who think differently to you, makes it easier to tackle challenges. He shared how he appreciates the advice, experiences, and support from others in his network who challenge him to see diverse opinions and approaches.
Business can be brutal. Having excellent leaders within the business who help steer things forward even during challenging moments is invaluable. His advice: hire people who share your vision and can help bring it to life.
