Ben MacMillan Managing Director of London based construction firm Argyll was one of the first people Andrew helped.
“17 years ago Andrew was the catalyst for me setting up a London based construction company focussed on the luxury residential market. The business took up a lot of my time and was never plain sailing. However, a combination of rapid growth in the early years, accelerated learning and the excitement of delivering diverse projects made the business a source of pride for a number of years. My relationship with the business changed over time as growth plateaued, mistakes were repeated and my ideas for developing the company were never fully realised. Common to many business owners I found my energy was swallowed by operation dependencies and managing customer relationships. Each time I took a step back from the front line performance suffered and I felt trapped. It was no longer entrepreneurial, creative or exciting. I owned a job and had bet my house on it.
A chance meeting with Andrew in 2017 was pivotal to reinvigorating my business and to some extent my life. He listened patiently as I laid out my frustrations. The next day he called me and said he had some ideas that could help. Initially Andrew took his time to understand our clients needs and the businesses strength and weaknesses before producing a diagnostic analysis. From here we dissected strategy and agreed on a narrower focus and clearer market position. The next step was improving our business systems and operating procedures to create a solid platform for growth and to free my time to focus on sales, marketing and strategic leadership. The business became systems rather than people dependent and we effectively relaunched with clear goals and a well-articulated strategy. Growth has risen from single digits to 30-35% per annum. Meanwhile margins have improved from 3-5% to 10-12%. Most importantly on a personal level my role has been transformed and my passion for my business has returned.
